This little light of mine

It came to my attention yesterday that Saben's entire preschool class likes to sing:

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine
(repeat)
Don't let Saben blow it out, I'm gonna let it shine

One little girl finally asked "Mommy, why does Saben want to blow out our lights?"

When we named him, "Satan" was the only word I could think of that rhymed with Saben. I figured it wasn't too horrible...I mean, its not a wussy nickname anyways. Ultimately its the most horrible, but not for a kid probably.

In the car I asked Saben about the song.
"Do you think the song is about you blowing out the light?"

He said "No, its about that snake blowing it out"

Wow, sometimes biblical teaching can be so darn complicated. This led to my surely confusing explanation of why a snake represents satan, why light represents goodness & God and why darkness represents sin/evil. And why we are supposed to be like a light and what sort of things can hide it, blow it out, etc. Not to mention what the heck a "bushel" is. Sheesh.

Who knew I'd ever be doing exegesis on a children's song. Who writes these things anyway?

That is really funny.... except not, of course.

It's funny, too - just yesterday Luke said what the heck is a bushel?!
